Magnesite

From Harbour Refractory — reference entry

Magnesite (MgCO3) is a source mineral for producing magnesia (MgO) used in basic refractories and other industries.

Description

After calcination, magnesite yields caustic or dead-burned magnesia grades with differing reactivity and density. Grading and chemistry are selected according to the intended refractory or chemical application.

Applications

  • Feedstock for MgO aggregates in basic refractories
  • Chemical and agricultural uses depending on grade
  • Magnesia-based mortars and castables

Packaging

  • Bagged or bulk on pallets with product and batch labels
  • Protect from moisture and contamination
  • Avoid excessive impact during handling and transport

Storage

  • Store in a dry, covered area away from moisture
  • Keep packaging sealed when not in use
  • FIFO for multiple lots to maintain uniformity
