Magnesia Alumina Spinel

From Harbour Refractory — reference entry

Magnesia–alumina spinel is a ceramic phase used to improve thermal shock resistance and corrosion behavior in refractory systems.

Description

It can be introduced as pre-formed spinel or generated in situ from MgO and Al2O3 sources. Selection considers chemistry, grain size, and compatibility with basic or alumina matrices in the intended lining design.

Applications

  • Component in cement kiln and steel ladle linings
  • Castables requiring moderated thermal expansion
  • Tailored blends for chemical compatibility with slags

Packaging

  • Sealed bags or drums on pallets with batch identification
  • Prevent contamination and moisture ingress
  • Avoid impact that may alter grain size distribution

Storage

  • Store dry and covered; reseal after opening
  • Segregate by lot to maintain formulation consistency
  • Use FIFO for multiple deliveries
