Fused Silica

From Harbour Refractory — reference entry

Fused silica is an amorphous, high-purity SiO₂ material valued for low thermal expansion and thermal-shock resistance.

Description

Produced by melting high-purity silica and rapidly cooling to a vitreous state. It is used in investment casting shells, fused silica refractories, and components that benefit from low thermal expansion.

Applications

  • Investment casting shells and refractories
  • Thermal-shock-resistant components
  • Insulating and precision parts in thermal equipment

Packaging

  • Bagged or drum-packed on pallets with batch labeling
  • Avoid contamination with metallic or ferrous particles
  • Protect from moisture during storage and transport

Storage

  • Store dry and covered; reseal after opening
  • Keep segregated to prevent cross-contamination
  • Use FIFO for multiple deliveries
