Expandable Graphite (High Purity)

From Harbour Refractory — reference entry

Expandable graphite is a modified graphite that expands upon heating to form a vermicular structure used for fire protection and sealing functions.

Description

Intercalation treatment enables expansion at temperature, generating a low-density, porous char. Grades differ by expansion ratio, particle size, and ash content for use in flame-retardant systems, gaskets, and insulating layers.

Applications

  • Flame-retardant additive in polymer systems
  • Gaskets and sealing materials
  • Intumescent layers in fire protection systems

Packaging

  • Sealed bags or drums on pallets with batch identification
  • Protect from moisture and contamination
  • Handle to minimize dust release

Storage

  • Store dry and ventilated; keep sealed when not in use
  • Avoid prolonged humidity to maintain expansion behavior
  • Use FIFO for lot consistency
