Diatomite

From Harbour Refractory — reference entry

Diatomite, or diatomaceous earth, is a naturally porous silica material used for filtration, insulation, and filler applications.

Description

Composed of microscopic fossilized diatoms, it exhibits high surface area and low density. Grades vary in purity, brightness, and particle size depending on processing and calcination.

Applications

  • Filtration aid for beverages, chemicals, and water treatment
  • Lightweight insulating fillers in castables and boards
  • Functional filler in paints, coatings, and plastics

Packaging

  • Multi-layer bags or bulk on pallets with labeling
  • Protect from moisture and mechanical compression
  • Handle carefully to minimize dust

Storage

  • Store in a dry, covered area
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to humidity
  • FIFO for maintaining consistent moisture level
