Calcined Clay

From Harbour Refractory — reference entry

Calcined clay is a dehydroxylated alumino-silicate used as a refractory ingredient and functional filler in industrial formulations.

Description

Thermal treatment modifies the clay’s mineral phases and reduces chemically bound water, improving thermal stability. Grading is selected to meet packing, rheology, and surface finish targets in castables, mortars, or ceramic bodies.

Applications

  • Refractory mortars and low-cement castables
  • Ceramic bodies, engobes, and kiln auxiliaries
  • Pozzolanic or filler use in construction materials (grade-dependent)

Packaging

  • Multi-layer bags or jumbo bags on pallets
  • Labels include product name and batch identification
  • Prevent tearing and contamination during handling

Storage

  • Store dry and covered to limit moisture uptake
  • Keep packaging sealed when not in use
  • Apply FIFO for consistent batching
