Alumina Hollow Spheres

From Harbour Refractory — reference entry

Alumina hollow spheres are lightweight ceramic granules with sintered alumina shells enclosing internal voids, used as insulating aggregates or fillers where reduced bulk density is required.

Description

They are produced by forming alumina-based granules with closed porosity and sintering to obtain rigid shells. Size distributions are chosen for packing characteristics, flow behavior, or target density in castables and shaped products.

Applications

  • Lightweight aggregate in insulating castables and ramming mixes
  • Partial replacement of dense aggregates to reduce thermal mass
  • Blends in alumina bricks or panels to tune bulk density and thermal conductivity
  • High-temperature fillers in composite insulation structures

Packaging

  • Multi-layer bags or cartons on wooden pallets
  • Labels indicate product name, particle size range, and batch identification
  • Handle with care to minimize crushing during transport

Storage

  • Store in a dry, ventilated area to limit moisture uptake
  • Keep packages sealed when not in use
  • Adopt first-in, first-out (FIFO) for multiple batches
